31 JANUARY
If this was evenly framed by white it would be wrong. Always end the month with
a nice picture, my head says, but I appear instead to have given you something designed
to induce instant clinical depression. Quelle dommage. Blame Clive Sinclair. I really
like the font he chose for the Sinclair logo, low and wide and all straight lines.
You'll know I like straight lines if you've ever spent more than a nanosecond on
this site. This is a simple picture, and it was quite simple to capture it when the
ZX81 emulator crashed (after I corrupted its RAM), but it's my favourite one this month.

Currently controlling your minds with my antennae.
Eggshell soon to be inhabited.
Too busy for pictures right now, big secret things are too big and secret.

Didn't get rid of all my glitch-pic postcards at Glitch Oslo 2002, so if anyone wants
one, email your snail-mail address (click @. or CONTACT$ links in the blue blocks),
and I'll post you one, they're quite nice. I'm in the UK, so if you live a long, long
way away, I might decide the postage isn't worth it. Anyway, it's a free offer
for as long as the postcards last - I have about 12 left.

I've been listening to more Biosphere non-stop for the past 96 hours. Substrata (1997)
is a must-have if you're into loop-based ambient misery with Russian
shortwave radio samples thrown in. Today's retina-burning monstrosity is a very
small section of a stretch blit bug glitch, enlarged by 2000%. The reddy-orange
pixels look like a solar flare. Observe the 3D illusion of translucency - the whole effect
looks like several layers of tissue paper have been glued together.
And you thought I just slapped any old rubbish up on these pages..
(Ever noticed how on the web it's OK to put two dots after a sentence to indicate
continuation.. but three dots is simply not, er, cool... ?)

Just discovered that one of the tracks off Biosphere's Patashnik album
samples the scene from Scanners (David Cronenburg, 1981?) where the
scanners are sitting in a circle in the woman's house, pooling their
energies. That's made my day, because both the film and album are
mindbombing. The bomb is in the bag. I got stopped at customs and they
asked to see the soles of my shoes in case I had a bomb there.
I kept telling them - the bomb is in the bag, look in the bag. That is
where the bomb is. But they didn't listen, so I forgave them.

For legal reasons the raw source material of this glitch image must be
concealed for 5 years. But by then you probably won't care anyway,
so there's no gain of entropy to worry about there.

On a separate issue, don't think I've forgotten to update you,
dear listener, about Oslo Glitch 2002, but I'm kinda busy with
mundane stuff. When I have more time and have gone through my photos
and logbook properly, I'll do a proper effort with nice titles and
everything, like a little timecapsule!

Off to Oslo-land today for the Glitch Festival (click here). I'll let you know how
it went when I come back on Monday. This picture thing is another
minimal offering, in keeping with this month's theme of stark, cold images. It
was also very quick to do - just a case of writing a program to POKE random values
into the ZX81 memory addresses you see scrolling up the left, until the VRAM got
infected. Is it art? Probably not, but so what? It's just like taking a photo of
the inside of an algorithm.
